Judith Curtis Kohlhaas
Judith Curtis Kohlhaas, born in Albuquerq u e , passed away in El Paso on September 7, 2021 of ALS. Judy was the daughter of Donald and Natalie Curtis of this city, who preceded her. She is survived by her husband Charles Albert (Chuck) with whom she had her first date in 1957 when she was 14 and he 15. Their families were close and Judy’s godfather was Chuck’s dad, Lewis Kohlhaas, now deceased. She is survived also by her children, Christian Raillard Kohlhaas of Austin and Julia Curtis Kohlhaas, MD and son-in-law Richard Guiltinan of Dallas as well as grandchildren Natalie Rose Guiltinan and Noelle Marie Guiltinan.
She attended Huning Castle School, Monte Vista, Jefferson and Highland and graduated from UNM with a degree in elementary education in 1965. While at UNM she was president of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta. She married Chuck that summer and accompanied him to Palo Alto, California where she taught second grade at the convent of the Sacred Heart in Menlo Park. In 1970 she and Chuck moved to New York where she became a children’s book editor at Scribner’s and later at MacMillian.
In 1994, she and Chuck moved to El Paso. She was active in the El Paso Symphony and was also on the executive committee of that organization for many years.
Judy loved to cook and entertain.
A graveside ceremony will be held in Albuquerque at Sunset Memorial Cemetery on Thursday, September 16th at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church.
